And then it is the indifferent ones who get angry, who wish to dissociate themselves from the consequences, who want it made known that they did not want it so and hence bear no responsibility. And while some whine piteously, and others howl obscenely, few people, if any, ask themselves this question: had I done my duty as a man, had I sought to make my voice heard, to impose my will, would what came to pass have ever happened? But few people, if any, see their indifference as a fault – their scepticism, their failure to give moral and material support to those political and economic groups that were struggling either to avoid a particular evil or to promote a particular good. Instead such people prefer to speak of the failure of ideas, of the definitive collapse of programmes, and other like niceties. They continue in their indifference and their scepticism."

<span lang="EN" style="font-family: "Calibri", "sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">(from A.

"...Io cammino in fila indiana, cammino in fila indiana e guardo davanti a me e infatti guardo 23723. Sei 23845? Dico, 23837? 24000? 28.000, chi sei? Mi giro e mi dice: io sono Mario. Ma come Mario! Deficiente, infame terrorista – Ma come Mario? Come puoi essere Mario? Siamo numeri! Siamo tutti numeri e tu sei Mario, sei? E mi rimetto in fila.

But I always see number 1, as I watch him on TV. Number 1 is the front of the line, the one who sets the pace: if he hurries up, we go faster, if he slows down, we slow down too, and if he marches we march. (...) At a certain point, while I am walking in single file, I see that there is someone walking by my side. (...)Well, I don’t see him very well, because I cannot turn round, otherwise the line would go to hell. I have to look straight in front of me, but I can see him out of the corner of my eye. (...) Could it be that he is the number 1 of another line? (...)But this is impossible, as there is only ONE line, as there is only ONE God, as there is only ONE thought , as there is only ONE mother. Right, it is impossible. So I...I turn just a bit without completely rotating, without looking at 23725, and I can see he is alone. He is alone, the bastard. I turn and I tell him: but who are you? Where are you going? Are you 23836? 23837? 24000? Who are you? I turn and he tells me: I am Mario. Mario?! ? – you terrorist, stupid, bastard! How can you be Mario if we are all numbers? This is the slave conception it is the image that the man of resentment has of power. The slave only conceives of power as the object of recognition the content of a representation the stake in a competition, and therefore makes it depend, at the end of a fight, on a simple attribution of established values.(...) the portrait of the master is from the start a portrait which represent the slave, at least as he is in his dreams, as at best a successful slave.

AntoEnglish
Thinking about some films I’ve recently seen, it came to my mind that the woman played a therapeutic, salvific, vital role. In The King’s speech without his wife, the future George VI would not have tackled his stuttering, in Incendies the woman’role is very evident, in Swing vote (quite terrible) the daughter, the journalist, the democrat candidate’s wife are the elements through which the man can become better. Women are necessary but not sufficient conditions. Necessary to the man and insufficient for him and for them (maybe not in Incendies).

This made me reconsider Emma, the book I least liked by Jane Austin. Here, the protagonist is messing around trying to combine other people’s marriage and it is a man, Mr Knightley, who plays the supporting role.
This being the case, it may appear that, in a way or the other, a therapist is always needed in a couple:-).Scomunicandohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05784587334916598625noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8049622717966814694.post-4385435542302850382011-04-02T21:34:00.003+02:002011-04-03T10:30:38.530+02:00La gaia scienza
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
I started writing a “serious” post but I got bored myself.
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">This is for me a trap: this country is hopeless, so there is nothing we can do, except to have endless conversations on berlusconism or anti-berlusconism, which to me increasingly resemble to those about Lazio and Roma.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Indignation without creation doesn’t lead to anything. “Instead of cursing the darkness, light up a candle” (Lao Tze) All these people, including myself:-), that keep complaining about the mismanagement, misbehavour, mis-everything, that are looking at Naple's rubbish, at the economic legal and moral decline of this country don’t look at Peccioli’s waste disposal facility, don’t look at STM Electronics, etc etc. I am obviously not saying that the dark side does not exist. I am saying that there is also other. Do we need to choose one or the other? Don’t think so, I am getting bored by binary thought as well.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Also, my definitive test is to walk the talk with what I say to my heir. I would never praise apathy or self-pity if he tells me that this or that teacher is terrible. So, what kind of example am I giving to him if I spend my days sitting on a sofa and saying “oh tempora oh mores”. Moreover, why should I push him to make effort to do something, if at the end of the day this country is hopeless?

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Spinoza, according to Deleuze, said that both the tyrant and the priest need sad passions in the people, to better subjugate them. Benigni sometimes ago said that happy people are virtuous and that we should be aware of unhappy people.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
Dinnertime with the heir who, to express how much he liked pizza, said: "pizza is pizza". Then I replied: " This is a tautology, is like saying A=A, or mummy is mummy". And he then calmy said "No, mum is a pain in the xxx, when she says these kind of things" . It is not a tautology, but it may have a stringent logic. Scomunicandohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05784587334916598625noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8049622717966814694.post-70491413589584776782011-03-30T11:09:00.003+02:002011-03-30T11:16:48.102+02:00En vrac

AntoEnglish

(To the reader, there is a sort of appendix below)

François Jullien, a French sinologist, uncovers some Western/Greek modes of thinking through the Chinese ones and viceversa. In order to do so he deals with questions such "what is culture?", "how is a transcultural dialogue possible?", "what kind of criteria we can use to judge it?".
Living in one particular culture may represent a first obstacle: sometimes we may act as the BriBri, a tribe living in Costa Rica. According to them there are two races: the Bri, identifying them and meaning human, the Ña identifying all the others and meaning…poo*.

Moreover, it is arduous to define culture. It is both singular and plural and continuously transforming. T. Todorov uses a nice analogy: culture is like the Argo ship, in which every single piece, every plank of wood, every rope, every nail had to be substituted during the voyage. So the ship that came back was materially different from the one that had left, yet it was the same**.

Concepts like identity and difference don’t help, on the contrary; through them we enclose culture in a hard core, we attribute specific traits to range it. But this is impossible if culture is like the Argonauts’ ship. Diversity (not difference) can be interpreted according to Jullien in terms of gap (écart). In this way we can make the “dia” (in Greek “through”, what is between spaces) as in dialogue works. Gap doesn’t need to presuppose uniqueness or specificity, it puts under tension cultures thus revealing one through the other. It is an open field to be explored, not a set of fixed qualities to be classified.

Not values but resources: this is how cultures should be understood. Values may lead to self-affirmation, they are inscribed in a relationship of forces; resources can be used by everybody, they feed intelligences, they stretch our understanding, or, if we are pessimist, our concerns.
It is also worth noting how this way of understanding culture avoids a simplistic relativism, for which everything is equivalent. It is indeed possible to defend specific resources, as Jullien does it for example when he supports the "veil ban" (or any such item indicating religious affiliation). Moreover resources are always placed somewhere: we cannot pick this or that element as we please, as if we were in a supermarket, without taking into consideration the environment (milieu).

The articulation between gap, place, distance is meaningful. To part, to mind the gap (s'écarter) means to open another possibility.

AntoEnglish
As I was desperately clinging to Jullien (who obviously is much more richer and complex), it came to my mind something I had wrote on feeling out of place when you live in another country. You can find it here, and I am referring in particular to the first bit, on exotopy: http://scomunicandomi.blogspot.com/2010/02/outsiders.html

Now, considering it after Jullien, could exotopy or feeling out of place be precisely what we experience while living in the gap, in the "space between” two cultures?Scomunicandohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05784587334916598625noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8049622717966814694.post-63440513939160611872011-03-21T01:42:00.000+01:002011-03-21T11:01:03.096+01:00Politically incorrect - 1

Farò alcune riflessioni intorno all’incidente di Fukushima Daiichi.
Altri no.
(Note: this is the first of 4-5 posts, which you can read below)

I will excommunicate, although always keeping in mind B. Russell’s words, working as a motto of this blog. I will write some thoughts around Fukushima Daiichi accident. But I will not talk about the dynamic of the accident, the mistakes, its impact, the responsibilities on it. I will wait for the end of the crisis, I will wait for the reports by international organisations, I will read them.

One week ago, for probably the first time in my life, I agreed with the Pope when he praised the dignity and courage of Japanese people in coping with the tragedy. I believe I am not the only one thinking highly of their behaviour, I suppose we are many.
I think what we admire, among other things, are their dignity, resilience, self possession and mutual help as well as the absence of hysterical reactions and panicking.
Now if someone admires something, if someone agrees with something, she/he should try to act accordingly ,right? I will try to follow the behaviour, value, thought that I praise.
Too easy, to say the least, to say something and to act in the opposite way. In Italian, ( guess why?:-)) we have a word for this behavior: “parolaio” which has something of the windbag but it is not exactly this.
Have we taken the time to understand what was happening before venting our thoughts? Have we had enough or good information? Have we kept quite in front of a tragedy? Someone yes, for example Martin Wolf * in yesterday’s article on the FT preferred to shut up, quoting L. Wittgenstein.
But not those who have been saying: Let’s go on. Not those who have been saying: Let’s stop everything. Not those who have been talking about an “apocalypse” and Japan being “out of control”. Not those who have been classifying the accident from thousands of kilometers away, before qualified international organizations said anything. Just to be clear: many politicians, many journalists, some national regulators, some EU commissioner. They to me are undeserving .

Quindi dove dobbiamo andare? Cosa dobbiamo sapere?

AntoEnglish
Over the last days some have been saying that emotions shouldn’t enter in any decision. Do emotions, irrationality, fear play always a negative role and should be dismissed?
I will use, in an abusive way, Plato’s myth comparing the human soul to a chariot in which there is a charioteer (the reason), driving two horses. The black one is ill-trained and troublesome (the bad passions), the other is noble and well-behaved and it depicts moral impulses such as courage.
When it is said the fear is not to be taken into consideration, we are considering it as the black bad horse.
Is it right? In my opinion is neither right a nor useful to do so. For our purpose, if someone dismisses public concerns over impacts on health or the environment, for me he/she is wrong.
I was advised by a friend to read an article* in which the journalist initially affirms that fear over the Fukushima accident plays a positive role: it can awakes, it can push us to reflect upon what’s happening, to know better and more. The article goes on saying that we need to distinguish two types of fear: one that “paralyses the action or it’s used by dictators and another that can push us to think and to discover”. So fear can be, in my version of Plato’s myth, the black as well the white horse.
I agree. And I think that it is lack of understanding (to say the least) on the part of the experts to paternalistically dismiss public concerns, as I think these concerns can play an important (euristic as the journalist says) role.
But I do not agree with what follows in her article. If fear/concerns are the engine pushing the quest for information, then they are starting point. We cannot stop here. We need to go further.
Otherwise, fear paralyses us, we stand still, we don’t move further risking to take our ghost for reality.
So where should we go? What should we know?
* It is an Italian article you can find here: http://www.repubblica.it/esteri/2011/03/16/news/spinelli_commento-13663577/Scomunicandohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05784587334916598625noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8049622717966814694.post-68987720269816532172011-03-21T00:26:00.000+01:002011-03-21T10:37:59.289+01:00What the hell is water - 3

AntoEnglish
Too many times I have not been asking myself the simplest questions, this is why I really like D. F. Wallace's story about the fishes and the water (you can find it here, right at the beginning: http://scomunicandomi.blogspot.com/2010/02/le-sombre-accablement-detre-en-ne.html).

Initially the Fukushima nuclear accident stroke us more than the earthquake, the tsunami, the dam washing out a village, the fire at the refinery (even more than Libia, Iran...).
Why ? What was/is our fear? I think it has to do with radioactivity. It is radioactivity that makes for us the difference between a collapsed dam and an accident nuclear power plant. In other words, we are afraid of radioactive releases in a nuclear accident as well as of radioactive wastes, whose radioactivity can last for thousands year.
So a first question, a first information fear should push us to find, is: what do we know about radioactivity? What information do we have, or (depending on which side we are) we give?
Do we know, for example:

What is radioactivity?

Is it always harmful or only at a certain level/dose?

If it is harmful to a certain level/dose, which is it?

If we don’t know, we don’t look for these questions, we don't give any answer, then the black horse is leading us.
Let’s assume we are all radioactive, radioactivity is a natural phenomenon, which can also be artificially made. Let’s assume that at some level it is not harmful but at others it can be very dangerous, even lethal.
To speak generically about radioactive rain, to say that radioactivity has increased x times in a certain place, doesn’t mean much, if we do not know the level in which is harmful.
Or better, this to me means to misinform, to stand still in a sea of fear. Scomunicandohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05784587334916598625noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8049622717966814694.post-27017625503109478992011-03-20T20:00:00.000+01:002011-03-21T10:32:31.776+01:00On risks - 4

Controllo : vedi l'esempio dell'aereo e dell'automobile.

* copiato da D. Ropeik qui: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1299209/

AntoEnglish
I have been saying that fear over nuclear power is essentially (not solely, but mainly) fear over radioactivity. We are afraid of the risks radioactivity may have on our health and the environment .

Let’s then talk about risks. Every human action entails some risk: falling in love, driving a car, taking a plan, working... Either we are dead or we run some risks. But there are more risky things that others: for example taking a plane is safer than going by car.
Besides the frequency of a risk, there are also subjective elements we associate to it. We tend to perceive something as more dangerous on the basis of some characteristics, even if it is not so in reality. Although there are higher risks in driving a car, people are generally more afraid of taking a plane.
Below some subjective elements* increasing our perception of risks (applying to many different things, like OGM, terrorist attacks, viruses...):

Trust: the less we trust the people/government/corporate institutions who are supposed to protect us, the more afraid we will be. The more we trust, the less fear we feel.
Dread: what is worse, being eaten alive by a shark or dying of heart disease?
Control: see airplane vs car above
Natural or man-made: we do prefer natural risk to man-made one.
Choice: a risk we choose seems less dangerous than a risk that is imposed on us.
Children: a risk that we perceive as lasting over time, impacting on future generations, is more dreadful than an immediate one.
Uncertainty: if we do not know, if we do not have information or do not understand the information, our concerns will be higher.
Novelty: new risks (like new viruses) tend to be more frightening
Awareness: the more we are aware of a risk, the more we are likely to be concerned about it.
Can it happen to me? : any risk seems larger if you think you or someone you care about could be a victim.
The risk-benefit trade-off : if we perceive a benefit from a behaviour or choice, the risk associated with it seems smaller. If there is no perceived benefit, the risk seems larger.
Catastrophic or chronic?: hazards that kill a group of people at one time in one place (such as plane crashes) evoke more fear than hazards that may take more lives, but over space and time (such as heart disease).

How many of these characteristics has radioactivity?

Thus, if we don’t wont to be paralysed by fear, we should ask ourselves how much of subjectivity there in our perception of risks we associate with nuclear power.

AntoEnglish
A last (for the time being) excommunication. Usually among those stressing the risk of nuclear power, there are many who think that we must act against global warming. For them, carbone dioxide is a major cause of climate change and if we don't do anything, sooner or later, environmental disasters will strike our planet.
If we agree with this assumption, and I do, then what is invisible, environmentally harmful and ever lasting? Scomunicandohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05784587334916598625noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8049622717966814694.post-29162896888835829012011-01-18T16:00:00.000+01:002011-01-18T16:00:44.016+01:00Nurture

The dark side of the light, Pablo Echaurren

AntoEnglish

It often happens to me to meet my thoughts. Last week I was chatting with a friend about many things, on loneliness, on parenthood, on nature/culture. I also went to a bookshop and bought a book on creativity. I quote (and translate very badly): " The opposition between nature and culture is very approximate, if not blatantly erroneous. Nor nature is by any means so rigid not to admit conspicuous readjustments and also by consequence innovations, neither culture is so noble and creative to rule out the presence of some constants, certain regulative conditions...(But) thanks to that opposition the human being knows who he/she is and what she/he is...to abolish this distinction...means to lose the safe feeling of definite boundaries, to overlook once again the gulf of possibilities, to reopen the exchange between the human being and the boundless and in many ways obscure biological world." (Creatività, E. Garroni, Quodlibet)

I've always been blindly against those statements evaluating human beaviours on the basis of their consistency with natural laws. I had never thought however that by wanting to save the human from some moralistic cage, I was arbitrarily confining nature. Also, some arguments are not (only?) made to stress a social order, disguised as a natural one, but they are based , if I understand correctly the quotation, on a psychological constitutive element.

I read this and I like it: " We are here, on the bridge, to ask ourselves certain questions. And they are very important questions; and we have very little time in which to answer them. The questions that we have to ask and to answer about that procession during this moment of transition are so important that they may well change the lives of all men and women for ever...Think we must...Let us never cease from thinking — what is this “civilization” in which we find ourselves?"

In a comment on one of my posts there is a beautiful quote by Camus "In the depth of winter, I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer." As I have not learnt it (yet), I went to look for the summer in the other emisphere.
When I was young I could hardly wait for New Year. Not really because of the parties, as if it were for me there should be banned for the over 18s, not so much for precooked pig's trotters*, maybe because it signed the end of Christmas holidays, but most of all beacause I used to think about how the year had turned out. Thinking of the past New Year, I had fun spotting those unexpected events that had occurred along 365 days: a trip, a new job, new acquaitances, there was always something new. And I ended up asking myself what could I expect for the days to come.
This has not happened to me over the last few years... as remarkably noticed a few days ago by me heir, while chatting about what he would like to do in his life. He answered that although he did not know exactely what, he knew he wished to have a life full of adventures, not a dull one like his mother. I gasped: to whom he said dull?!
This year, thanks to some coincidences, some of which wanted, I ended up in the other emisphere in front of the ocean with a warm air, in the place I so much wished to be one year ago. As if I would have gone back not only in time but also in space. The vulcanoes, the ocean, the stars and the mountains where all there, but that bit of me who would have so much liked to see it before, wasn't there anymore. Still, other bits had appeared. Certainly the possibility to find myself where I had wanted to be, so faraway from all the distractions, helped me noticing the change. So the wish I make for myself and for those who enjoy this kind of things is to see the change in one year time, not necessarily by travelling 13.000 km away. In the teeth of my son and saving some money:-).

I've got a personal problem with Mr B. I don't mean one at political, social, economic or moral level. My problem, a very minor one, is between him and myself.
It happens to me to travel for work in other countries, sometimes they are old European democracies, sometimes so called new comers. I am sick and tired of standing furiously silent and helpless in front of front of giggles or even bursts of laugh (the latter being more frequent in the old democracies, usually more arrogant) as soon as my accent tells my Italian origin, and immediately the dialogue starts dealing with Mr B. These incredulous snickers are not affected abroad by gender, social class, political beliefs or education. From the taxi driver to the manager, from the shop assistant to the engineer, they all laugh about us. They refer to various aspect of Mr B., more often to those "hotter". However, when government or national ability to carry out any project is under ironic scrutiny is precisely when I get really helplessly angry. In this case, what could I say? I can only take those laughs, those patronising looks affectedly moved by pity and stay there, silently pissed off.

AntoEnglish
Tonight I listened to a concert for Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, in a church in Rome. I went as the libretto was written by a friend, whom I had not seen for a long time. Certainly, even if very little, the fact the Orchestra Sinfonica Abruzzese was playing it, contributed to my decision to go, alone, there. Many players come from the city of my grandmother, of my father, of half of my family, a city that has suffered a lot recently.

Also, yesterday news about the statues of the two judges being vandalised, gave the final kick, if needed, for me to go.
I have experienced some deaths through others, either ancient ones read in school books or more recent, told to me by previous generations: war deaths or guerrilla ones, urban, between nations or in some faraway land.
But I have witnessed some of them, thanks also to tv.
That of Giovanni Falcone is for me a brown, deadly hole. Borsellino’s one is a foretold ending of a dead man walking.
When he died I was in Paris, sleeping in a youth hostel from which I went up and down looking for a place to stay the following September. I had not a lot of money, I was oftern hungry, it was a hot summer. And on that very day I found myself by chance in the hall where the tv was. I saw on the screen a photo of Paolo Borsellino, I sat down, I tried to understand and I realised. I cried, while looking aroung to find somebody to share my sadness. They were all foreigners, unable to understand who was dead by the hand of few, for the impotence and in the indifference of many.

Scomunicandohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05784587334916598625noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8049622717966814694.post-72815698225127230612010-06-06T08:39:00.000+02:002010-06-06T12:07:58.255+02:00In this world there are only two tragedies. One is not getting what one wants, the other is getting it

As I was writing about business travels, about the fact that you end up in places you wouldn't have gone and seldom where you would have, and that in any event you find those places interesting enough, I thought something similar may apply to adult life.
Some nights ago, I was with a friend who was telling me how much she wanted to go back to her hometown, being tired of not finding in Rome what she had come to look for.
Unsuccessfully looking for something while finding another, not worst neither better just different, isn't a very common experience in adult life?
For me as for my friend, cities are the way I assess expectations versus reality. I wonder what those who have been living in the same place use to do so... people? Who knows.
I went to Paris to become a philosopher and my career ended before even starting, I went to London to become rich and I was never so poor as in those days, I went to Milan to settle down and I had to sell my house six moths after buying it. As for Rome, I will not say anything as I am still here.
Yet, in Paris I had my child, in London I went to the best school I've ever been, in both cities I met very dear friends and in Milan I learnt what now earns my living. Who would have guessed?Scomunicandohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05784587334916598625noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8049622717966814694.post-73274181510536439812010-06-05T10:24:00.001+02:002010-06-07T22:41:19.035+02:00Play it again, Sam

*Come ho provato confusamente a dire qui: http://scomunicandomi.blogspot.com/2010/02/le-sombre-accablement-detre-en-ne.html

AntoEnglish

I’m coming back after a long pause, leaving unfinished my "reasoning" on evil. The complexity of the topic is just too much for me and at a certain point I felt exhausted, because …you cannot feign to think, just out of the blue. Even though I truly believe in the ability of everyone to think* and I consider it both an aesthetic pleasure and a moral obligation, I also find a difference between constantly exercise your thinking and doing it for leisure. I felt myself so small facing this complexity, than I had to give up. Having saying that, those posts helped me to unravel a topic I have been randomly thinking about for a long time. Well…incompletely unravel, but that’s the way I go on.
While experiencing my inadequacy, I have been travelling for business: France, UK, Spain, Belgium, Slovakia, each destination for a few days. Business travels are weird. You meet many people, as far as I am concerned many more than when I travel for leisure, but in a work contest, regulated by specific codes of conduct. In this way, I find them both interesting and tiring. You are forced to overcome cultural and background differences, while when I travel on my own and I'm tired of feeling misplaced I can always take a book or have a walk to gain back some energies. At work you cannot. If the person in front of you has a facial mimic very different from yours and you don’t understand anything, you have to rely just on a language, which most of the times is neither your interlocutor’s not yours. And with regard to this lingua franca, how do you know whether misunderstandings are due to insufficient language abilities or they are part of an astute negotiating tactic?
If you realise your business partner finds your manners impolite, how on earth can you adjust them, not knowing the culture you've dived in? Moreover, you cannot make mistakes, or your boss gets angry at you:-).
So it is a case of forced learning, taking place most of time where you would not even dream to go, as my first – and last for the time being- trip to the States. Four days, including intercontinental flight, to a small town near Boston and to Reno, Nevada.
I found myself in the middle of the desert in a gigantic casino-hotel, with a five meters brass statue depicting a cowboy holding a laze, me who dreams at night to go to the Big Apple, who was brought up with American comedies, who loves jazz and musicals and would like to lose herself in the MOMA.

Well, at the same time I would never ever ended up in Reno, and many other places like it, if it wasn’t for the job.

*Like I confusely tried to say here: http://scomunicandomi.blogspot.com/2010/02/le-sombre-accablement-detre-en-ne.html
Scomunicandohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05784587334916598625noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8049622717966814694.post-80404456537308921972010-04-25T19:31:00.000+02:002010-04-25T19:52:07.728+02:00Oh Diogenes - 12, on bombs

AntoEnglish

…Bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki to end the war, to restore peace, to remove from power a militarist regime…
In this case we can see in action the lesser evil, the arithmetic of ethics, the usisms, the temptation of good, among other things.
I’ll follow Todorov. In order to end the war Japan was asked to commit to an unconditional surrender. In other words, it needed to be not only won, but punished. Japan would have accepted the surrender but under certain conditions, for example the maintain of traditional structures of power (the Emperor). So the ultimatum was refused and the war went on.
A common notion is that bombs killed Japanese people (320.000 ) but saved 1 million of American lives. Here nothing is missing: arithmetic of ethics, usism, lesser evil.
And, as Todorov asks, how can we count virtual deaths? The course of history could have taken another path.
Also, was unconditional surrender a necessity (given also that the Emperor remained)?
And were bombs the only means to achieve this unconditional surrender?
According to Todorov there were at least four reasons for which bombs were dropped: an act of deterrence towards Stalin, a vindication for Pearl Harbour, an anti-Japanese racism and the bomb itself, or better the instrumental thinking for which , once the bomb was ready, it was to be used.
From a moral point of view it is important to note that many agents were necessary to achieve such an enormous act. Hence responsibility was fragmented, no one felt fully responsible for the bomb, thinking more in terms of means than of ends. Many were indeed convinced that this was a legitimised act of war. In 1956 the university of Oxford was to decide to give Truman, the same of the bomb, an honoris causa PHD. Only one Professor, Elisabeth Anscombe, disagreed claiming that to kill civilians did not seem a great action to her.
Todorov says “ Civilian bombings are one of the most efficient and widespread means to win a war. Every total war blurs war actions and war crimes. Does it mean that the last notion has lost sense nowdays? Or that every war is a criminal one?”
And as for the temptation of the good, Hiroshima teaches me that not only totalitarian regime commit evil, that evil can be said to be perpetrated to achieve good and that it is the effect of a reasoning that does not coordinate ends and means.
As Romain Gary said “when a war is won, not winners, but losers are liberated”. Liberated from the illusion to mix up with good.
Scomunicandohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05784587334916598625noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8049622717966814694.post-41995440824684649432010-04-25T17:10:00.000+02:002010-04-25T17:18:02.174+02:00Oh Diogenes - 11, on "usism"
Primo Levi

I would like to make two other considerations on the lesser evil: firstly arithmetic (or economy as Weizman defines it better) and the lesser evil, the quantitative "less evil is better than more " in ethics is problematic to say the least.
Secondly, it seems to me that often (I don’t say always for conservatism principle) it exists another principle at the basis of the lesser evil: the “usism” (my translation) as called by Primo Levi.
He tells that on a hot day he managed to find some water and shared it with a friend of his, but not with the others. The usism is egoism extended to selected neighbours. Selected on the basis of relationship (blood or friendship) or on identity (ethnic, religious, etc). I must say Levi’s case softens me up. He does not blame himself but he thinks upon the fact that “maybe everyone of us is a Cain for another Abel, and he may kill him in the field without acknowledging this”. His is a very sharp analyis, maybe too much for me. I cannot see the evil, just the tragic, in giving the water to a friend rather than to somebody else. But I do understand it is the same logic that dangerously applies to the identitarian usism. Here I refer to Todorov.
Following him, my starting point is that we all have an identity, an identity which is plural (gender, ethnicity, religion, culture and many other things make this plurality). When one of these is privileged among others, particularly if it is a collective one, then there may cause evil. To prefer somebody because he/he is white, or catholic, or European etc etc is an elevator to the gallows. It is evident why this identitarian noisms cannot be our criteria to choose our neighbours so I stop here:-).

Ovvero, quali criteri ci portano in realtà a commettere azioni malvagie?

Note to the reader: if you want to follow the bla bla, it’s better to start from the beginning, from Oh Diogenes 1.
If universal love is impossible for us, flawed and finite human beings, we need to choose our neighbour, forgetting someone, feeling sorry for other ones.
What needn’t to be, however, the criteria of this choice? In other words, what are the selection criteria which will lead to commit evil actions?
The lesser evil is, in my opinion, the first criterion to be eliminated at least on a moral level*.
An extreme and horrific case of this logic is described by H. Arendt, with regard to those Jews
who during the II World War accepted Nazi privileged categories on whom should or should not have been sent to the lager: Polish Jews and not German ones, common people and not veterans ,…. To save some, you let others be killed, that’s how the logic of the lesser evil works here. Coming back to Arendt’s case, those Jews precisely by finding exception were in fact recognising the Nazi principle. “Those who choose the lesser evil – Arendt commented - forget very quickly that they chose evil”.
Another adept to the lesser evil was Stalin for whom “you cannot make an omelette without breaking some eggs”. Trivialisation, fake necessity are at place here to make us forget that lesser evil is evil anyway.
So what should the eggs do? Eggs should speak up said H. Arendt, advocating in the case reported above civil disobedience.
We need to exit the false dilemma. Or, as Robert Pirsig said when asked which horn he would choose in front of an angry bull, one “can refuse to enter the arena”, “throw sand in the bull’s eyes”, and “sing the bull to sleep”.
* On this subject I like very much a book, unfortunately only in Italian, bu Eyal Weizman but you can find his thought on the lesser evil, on a political and moral level here: http://roundtable.kein.org/node/802.
