Nurture

The dark side of the light, Pablo Echaurren

It often happens to me to meet my thoughts. Last week I was chatting with a friend  about many things, on loneliness, on parenthood, on nature/culture. I also went to a bookshop and bought a book on creativity. I quote (and translate very badly): " The opposition between nature and culture is very approximate, if not blatantly erroneous.  Nor nature is by any  means so rigid not to admit conspicuous readjustments and also by consequence  innovations, neither culture is so noble and creative to rule out the presence of some constants, certain regulative conditions...(But) thanks to that opposition the human being knows who he/she is and what she/he is...to abolish this distinction...means to lose the safe feeling of definite boundaries, to overlook once again the gulf of possibilities, to reopen the exchange between the human being and the boundless and in many ways obscure biological world." (Creatività, E. Garroni, Quodlibet)
I've always been blindly against those statements evaluating  human beaviours on the basis of their consistency with natural laws. I had never thought however that by wanting to save the human from some moralistic cage, I was arbitrarily confining nature. Also, some arguments are not (only?) made to stress a social order, disguised as a natural one, but they are based , if I understand correctly the quotation, on a  psychological constitutive element.

If I knew what it means

I read this and I like it: " We are here, on the bridge, to ask ourselves certain questions. And they are very important questions; and we have very little time in which to answer them. The questions that we have to ask and to answer about that procession during this moment of transition are so important that they may well change the lives of all men and women for ever...Think we must...Let us never cease from thinking — what is this “civilization” in which we find ourselves?"
Three guineas, Virginia Woolf.

And summer's lease hath all too short a date

In barba a mio figlio e risparmiando un bel pò di soldi:-) AntoEnglish In a comment on one of my posts there is a beautiful quote by Camus "In the depth of winter, I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer." As I have not learnt it (yet), I went to look for the summer in the other emisphere. When I was young I could hardly wait for New Year. Not really because of the parties, as if it were for me there should be banned for the over 18s, not so much for precooked pig's trotters*, maybe because it signed the end of Christmas holidays, but most of all beacause I used to think about how the year had turned out. Thinking of the past New Year, I had fun spotting those unexpected events that had occurred along 365 days: a trip, a new job, new acquaitances, there was always something new. And I ended up asking myself what could I expect for the days to come. This has not happened to me over the last few years... as remarkably noticed a few days ago by me heir, while chatting about what he would like to do in his life. He answered that although he did not know exactely what, he knew he wished to have a life full of adventures, not a dull one like his mother. I gasped: to whom he said dull?! This year, thanks to some coincidences, some of which wanted, I ended up in the other emisphere in front of the ocean with a warm air, in the place I so much wished to be one year ago. As if I would have gone back not only in time but also in space. The vulcanoes, the ocean, the stars and the mountains where all there, but that bit of me who would have so much liked to see it before, wasn't there anymore. Still, other bits had appeared. Certainly the possibility to find myself where I had wanted to be, so faraway from all the distractions, helped me noticing the change. So the wish I make for myself and for those who enjoy this kind of things is to see the change in one year time, not necessarily by travelling 13.000 km away. In the teeth of my son and saving some money:-). *pig's trotter is a traditional dish on New Year's Eve.
