What date is today?

Commonplace of Forty

Fifteen thousand dry days have passed,
lost fifteen thousand times,
zero to fifteen thousand suns were born,
counted hourly
in the solemn, more grotesque gesture
to wind a clock invented
to seek, in the years forgotten,
the patience to go on living the rest.
(Jose Saramago)

I would like to live the rest with Mafalda's irony, Anna Magnani's passion, Nina Simone's creative rage, Billie Holiday's blues, Ella Fitzgerald's joy, Lilith's transgression, H. Arendt's brain, S. Weil's soul, Ornella Vanoni's unpleasant pleasantness, I. Bergman's face with F. Ardant's mouth and my grandmother's eyes, some jokes by Luciana Littizzetto, words by Wislava Szymborska, Anna Achmatova, Silvia Plath, Emily Dickinson, Alda Merini, Felicia Impastato's strenght, following Pina Baush steps with M. Dietrich's legs:-).
Not too bad, right?

Bella ciao

***
Sono un caso disperato
Finalmente un critico sagace ha rivelato
(sapevo che lo avrebbero scoperto)
che nei miei racconti sono parziale
e a margine mi esorta

in Argentina mi diedero quarantotto ore
(altrimenti mi ammazzavano) perché me ne andassi
e quanto a me mi deportarono

se fossi stato neutrale
non avrei avuto bisogno
di queste terapie intensive
però cosa posso farci
sono parziale
incurabilmente parziale
totalmente
parziale

già lo so
questo significa che non potrò aspirare
a tantissimi onori e riconoscimenti
e glorie e cariche
che il mondo riserva agli intellettuali
che si rispettino
vale a dire ai neutrali
con un'aggravante
poiché ogni volta ci sono meno neutrali
i riconoscimenti sono ripartiti
tra pochissimi

dopo tutto e a partire
dalle mie confesse limitazioni
devo riconoscere che per quei pochi neutrali
provo una certa ammirazione
o meglio li considero con stupore
perché in realtà è necessaria una tempra d'acciao
per mantenersi neutrali davanti a episodi come
girón
tlatelolco
trelew
pando

e neutrale nelle belle lettere
diciamo indignarsi contro Pinochet
durante l'insonnia
e scrivere racconti diurni
su Atlantide

non è una cattiva idea
e chiaramente
parziali e neutrali
torturati e carnefici
ossia la stessa contesa
cuba sì yankee no

e poemi e saggi e canzoni e romanzi

e fantasmi e pesciolini

"It seems that history is nothing but an immense natural phenomenon, an eruption, an earthquake, and that we are all its victims, both those who wanted it to happen as well as those who did not, those who knew it would happen and those who did not, those who were active and those who were indifferent. And then it is the indifferent ones who get angry, who wish to dissociate themselves from the consequences, who want it made known that they did not want it so and hence bear no responsibility. And while some whine piteously, and others howl obscenely, few people, if any, ask themselves this question: had I done my duty as a man, had I sought to make my voice heard, to impose my will, would what came to pass have ever happened? But few people, if any, see their indifference as a fault – their scepticism, their failure to give moral and material support to those political and economic groups that were struggling either to avoid a particular evil or to promote a particular good. Instead such people prefer to speak of the failure of ideas, of the definitive collapse of programmes, and other like niceties. They continue in their indifference and their scepticism."

I'm a Lost Cause

An astute critic finally revealed
(I knew they'd find out someday)
that I'm partial in my fiction
and he urges me tangentially
to become neutral
like any self-respecting intellectual

I think he's right
I'm partial
of this there can be no doubt
moreover I'd say I'm hopelessly partial
a lost cause in the end
since no matter how hard I try
I'll never be able to be neutral

in various countries on this continent
distinguished specialists
have done the possible and the impossible
to cure me of my partiality
for example the national library in my country
ordered a partial expurgation
of my partial books
in argentina they gave me forty-eight hours
to leave (or they'd have killed me)
with my partiality on my back
finally in peru they held my partiality incommunicado
and deported me

had I been neutral
I wouldn't have needed
all that intensive therapy
but what can I do
I'm partial
incurably partial
although it might sound a bit strange
totally
partial

yes I know
that means I won't be able to aspire
to the many honors and reputations
and invocations and distinctions
that the world reserves for intellectuals
who are self-respecting
who, in other words, are neutral
and since there are fewer and fewer who are neutral
the distinctions are shared
by just a few

after all and given
my confessed limitations
I have to admit that I have a certain admiration
for the few who are neutral
or rather I reserve a certain awe for them
since in reality you need a steel temple
to remain neutral through episodes like
the bay of pigs
tlatelolco
trelew
pando
la moneda

it's clear that you
and maybe this is what the critic wanted to tell me
can be partial in private life
and neutral in belles lettres
for example you could get indignant at pinochet
in the middle of the night
and write short stories the next day
about atlantis

it's not a bad idea
and of course
there's the advantage
that on the one hand
you'd have a conflicted conscience
and that's always a sign of
a good foundation for art
and on the other hand it doesn't leave you vulnerable
to beatings from the bourgeois and/or neutral press

it's not a bad idea
but
I already find myself discovering or imagining
on the sunken continent
the existence of the oppressed and their oppressors
the partial and the neutral
the tortured and the tyrannical
in other words the same ballgame―
cuba yes yankees no―
that's found on not-sunken continents

therefore
as it seems I have no other choice
and I'm definitely a write-off
for fruitful neutrality
most likely I'll keep on writing
stories that aren't neutral
and poems and essays and songs and novels
that aren't neutral
but I'm warning you that they'll be that way
even if they don't deal with tortures and jails
or other topics apparently
intolerable to neutrals

they'll be that way even if they deal with butterflies
and clouds and goblins and little fish.

Aknowledgments

A.Balasubramaniam, Rest in Resistance

"...Io cammino in fila indiana, cammino in fila indiana e guardo davanti a me e infatti guardo 23723. Sei 23845? Dico, 23837? 24000? 28.000, chi sei? Mi giro e mi dice: io sono Mario. Ma come Mario! Deficiente, infame terrorista – Ma come Mario? Come puoi essere Mario? Siamo numeri! Siamo tutti numeri e tu sei Mario, sei? E mi rimetto in fila.

"(...) I walk in single file and look in front of me. Indeed I look at 23723. Well, it is not completely true to say that I look at 23723, because as we are walking in single file,  we never turn, so what I actually see is half of 23723, his back. But  I always see number 1, as I watch him on TV. Number 1 is the front of the line, the one who sets the pace: if he hurries up, we go faster, if he slows down, we slow down too, and if he marches we march. (...) At a certain point,  while I am walking in single file,  I see that there is someone walking by my side. (...)Well, I don’t see him very well,  because I cannot turn round, otherwise the line would go to hell. I have to look straight in front of me, but I can see him out of the corner of my eye. (...) Could it be that he is the number 1 of another line? (...)But this is impossible, as there is only ONE line, as there is only ONE God, as there is only ONE thought , as there is only ONE mother. Right, it is impossible. So I...I turn just a bit without completely rotating, without looking  at 23725,  and I can see he is alone. He is alone, the bastard. I turn and I tell him: but who are you? Where are you going? Are you 23836? 23837? 24000? Who are you? I turn and he tells me: I am Mario.  Mario?! ? – you terrorist, stupid, bastard! How can you be Mario if we are all numbers? We are all numbers and you are Mario?
I can feel the line slowing down, I can feel it stopping, I see 23723  in front of me turning. This bloody bastard is scaring the hell out of us. I take all my courage,  I stop, I hit him, I slam him down to the floor, and I leave him there with his head smashed. I come back in line. We kill the terrorist. The line keeps moving and I can hear a refrain: twenty three thousand seven hundred twenty three, twenty three thousand seven hundred twenty three, twenty three thousand seven hundred twenty three..."
(from Io cammino in fila indiana, Ascanio Celestini, qui: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bT9aHUPWXMs)

"The famous dialectical aspect of the master slave relationship depends on the fact that power is conceived not only as will to power but as representation of power, representation of superiority, recognition by the "one" of the superiority of the "other". What the wills (...) want is to have their power recognized, to represent their power. This is the slave conception it is the image that the man of resentment has of power. The slave only conceives of power as the object of recognition the content of a representation the stake in a competition, and therefore makes it depend, at the end of a fight, on a simple attribution of established values.(...) the portrait of the master is from the start a portrait which represent the slave, at least as he is in his dreams, as at best a successful slave. Underneath the image of the master we always find the slave."

Revolutionary Jane

AntoEnglish
Thinking about some films I’ve recently seen, it came to my mind that the woman played a therapeutic, salvific, vital role. In The King’s speech without his wife, the future George VI would not have tackled his stuttering, in Incendies the woman’role is very evident, in Swing vote (quite terrible) the daughter, the journalist, the democrat candidate’s wife are the elements through which the man can become better. Women are necessary but not sufficient conditions. Necessary to the man and insufficient for him and for them (maybe not in Incendies).

This made me reconsider Emma, the book I least liked by Jane Austin. Here, the protagonist  is messing around trying to combine other people’s marriage and it is a man, Mr Knightley, who plays the supporting role.
This being the case, it may appear that, in a way or the other, a therapist is always needed in a couple:-).

AntoEnglish

Even Internazionale’s editorial said it last week: in Italy it is impossible to do anything serious or complex, given our government/ politicians. I started writing a “serious” post but I got bored myself.
This is for me a trap: this country is hopeless, so there is nothing we can do, except to have endless conversations on berlusconism or anti-berlusconism, which to me increasingly resemble to those about Lazio and Roma.

Indignation without creation doesn’t lead to anything. “Instead of cursing the darkness, light up a candle” (Lao Tze) All these people, including myself:-), that keep complaining about the mismanagement, misbehavour, mis-everything, that are looking at Naple's rubbish, at the economic legal and moral decline of this country don’t look at Peccioli’s waste disposal facility, don’t look at STM Electronics, etc etc. I am obviously not saying that the dark side does not exist. I am saying that there is also other. Do we need to choose one or the other? Don’t think so, I am getting bored by binary thought as well.

Also, my definitive test  is to walk the talk with what I say to my heir. I would never praise apathy or self-pity if he tells me that this or that teacher is terrible. So, what kind of example am I giving to him if I spend my days sitting on a sofa and saying “oh tempora oh mores”. Moreover, why should I push him to make effort to do something, if at the end of the day this country is hopeless?

Spinoza, according to Deleuze, said that both the tyrant and the priest need sad passions in the people, to better subjugate them. Benigni sometimes ago said that happy people are virtuous and that we should be aware of unhappy people.

Or as Nietsche said “the desert is growing, woe to him in whom desert hides”.

Elementary, my dear Watson

AntoEnglish
Dinnertime with the heir who, to express how much he liked pizza, said: "pizza is pizza". Then I replied: " This is a tautology, is like saying A=A, or mummy is mummy".  And he then calmy said "No, mum is a pain in the xxx, when she says these kind of things" . It is not a tautology, but it may have a stringent logic.

La Farfalla (III)

Dirò: tu non esisti?
Ma cosa mai allora
di simile in te sente
la mia mano? e quei colori
d’inesistenza non son frutto.
E chi ha suggerito
quelle tue tinte?
Io non avrei la forza,
io, grumo borbottante
di parole al colore estranee,
di immaginare questa
tua tavolozza.

A tale of two cities

A Urania

E a sud,
anzi a sud-ovest, ecco montagne brune,
e vagano nel carice cavalli przvali,
si fanno gialli i visi. Poi, più in là, corvette,
navigano e si fa azzurro lo spazio,
come una biancheria con i merletti.
(I. Brodskij)

(I. Calvino, Le città invisibili)

AntoEnglish

To Urania

Everything has its limit, including sorrow.
A windowpane stalls a stare. Nor does a grill abandon
a leaf. One may rattle the keys, gurgle down a swallow.
Loneliness cubes a man at random.
A camel sniffs at the rail with a resentful nostril;
a perspective cuts emptiness deep and even.
And what is space anyway if not the
body's absence at every given
point? That's why Urania's older than sister Clio!
In daylight or with the soot-rich lantern,
you see the globe's pate free of any bio,
you see she hides nothing, unlike the latter.
There they are, blueberry-laden forests,
rivers where the folk with bare hands catch sturgeon
or the towns in whose soggy phone books
you are starring no longer; farther eastward surge on
brown mountain ranges; wild mares carousing
in tall sedge; the cheekbones get yellower
as they turn numerous. And still farther east, steam
dreadnoughts or cruisers,
and the expanse grows blue like lace underwear.
(J. Brodsky)
"The hell is not something that will be: if there is one, it is already here, the hell where we live everyday, that we form staying together. There are two ways not to suffer from. The first one is easy for many people: accepting the hell and become part of it up to the point not to see it anymore. The second one is risky and requires attention and continuous learning: searching and being able to recognize who and what, into the hell, is not hell, and to make it last, and to give space to it.”
(I. Calvino, Invisible Cities)

Lately, the second option seems to me a bit more difficult.

Che popò di questione! -1

(To the reader, there is a sort of appendix below)

François Jullien, a French sinologist, uncovers some Western/Greek modes of thinking through the Chinese ones and viceversa. In order to do so he deals with questions such "what is culture?", "how is a transcultural dialogue possible?", "what kind of criteria we can use to judge it?".
Living in one particular culture may represent a first obstacle: sometimes we may act as the BriBri, a tribe living in Costa Rica. According to them there are two races: the Bri, identifying them and meaning human, the Ña identifying all the others and meaning…poo*.

Moreover, it is arduous to define culture. It is both singular and plural and continuously transforming. T. Todorov uses a nice analogy: culture is like the Argo ship, in which every single piece, every plank of wood, every rope, every nail had to be substituted during the voyage. So the ship that came back was materially different from the one that had left, yet it was the same**.

Concepts like identity and difference don’t help, on the contrary; through them we enclose culture in a hard core, we attribute specific traits to range it. But this is impossible if culture is like the Argonauts’ ship. Diversity (not difference) can be interpreted according to Jullien in terms of gap (écart). In this way we can make the “dia” (in Greek “through”, what is between spaces) as in dialogue works. Gap doesn’t need to presuppose uniqueness or specificity, it puts under tension cultures thus revealing one through the other. It is an open field to be explored, not a set of fixed qualities to be classified.

Not values but resources: this is how cultures should be understood. Values may lead to self-affirmation, they are inscribed in a relationship of forces; resources can be used by everybody, they feed intelligences, they stretch our understanding, or, if we are pessimist, our concerns.
It is also worth noting how this way of understanding culture avoids a simplistic relativism, for which everything is equivalent. It is indeed possible to defend specific resources, as Jullien does it for example when he supports the "veil ban" (or any such item indicating religious affiliation). Moreover resources are always placed somewhere: we cannot pick this or that element as we please, as if we were in a supermarket, without taking into consideration the environment (milieu).

The articulation between gap, place, distance is meaningful. To part, to mind the gap (s'écarter) means to open another possibility.

Outsider - 2

AntoEnglish
As I was desperately clinging to Jullien (who obviously is much more richer and complex), it came to my mind something I had wrote on feeling out of place when you live in another country. You can find it here, and I am referring in particular to the first bit, on exotopy: http://scomunicandomi.blogspot.com/2010/02/outsiders.html

Now, considering it after Jullien, could exotopy or feeling out of place be precisely what we experience while living in the gap, in the "space between” two cultures?

Politically incorrect - 1

Farò alcune riflessioni intorno all’incidente di Fukushima Daiichi.
Altri no.

(Note: this is the first of 4-5 posts, which you can read below)

I will excommunicate, although always keeping in mind B. Russell’s words, working as a motto of this blog. I will write some thoughts around Fukushima Daiichi accident. But I will not talk about the dynamic of the accident, the mistakes, its impact, the responsibilities on it. I will wait for the end of the crisis, I will wait for the reports by international organisations, I will read them.

One week ago, for probably the first time in my life, I agreed with the Pope when he praised the dignity and courage of Japanese people in coping with the tragedy. I believe I am not the only one thinking highly of their behaviour, I suppose we are many.
I think what we admire, among other things, are their dignity, resilience, self possession and mutual help as well as the absence of hysterical reactions and panicking.
Now if someone admires something, if someone agrees with something, she/he should try to act accordingly ,right? I will try to follow the behaviour, value, thought that I praise.
Too easy, to say the least, to say something and to act in the opposite way. In Italian, ( guess why?:-)) we have a word for this behavior: “parolaio” which has something of the windbag but it is not exactly this.
Have we taken the time to understand what was happening before venting our thoughts? Have we had enough or good information? Have we kept quite in front of a tragedy? Someone yes, for example Martin Wolf * in yesterday’s article on the FT preferred to shut up, quoting L. Wittgenstein.
But not those who have been saying: Let’s go on. Not those who have been saying: Let’s stop everything. Not those who have been talking about an “apocalypse” and Japan being “out of control”. Not those who have been classifying the accident from thousands of kilometers away, before qualified international organizations said anything. Just to be clear: many politicians, many journalists, some national regulators, some EU commissioner. They to me are undeserving .

On fear - 2

Quindi dove dobbiamo andare? Cosa dobbiamo sapere?

Over the last days some have been saying that emotions shouldn’t enter in any decision. Do emotions, irrationality,  fear play always a negative role and should be dismissed?
I will use, in an abusive way, Plato’s myth comparing the human soul to a chariot in which there is a charioteer (the reason), driving two horses. The black one is ill-trained and troublesome (the bad passions), the other is noble and well-behaved and it depicts moral impulses such as courage.
When it is said the fear is not to be taken into consideration, we are considering it as the black bad horse.
Is it right? In my opinion is neither right a nor useful to do so. For our purpose, if someone dismisses public concerns over impacts on health or the environment, for me he/she is wrong.
I was advised by a friend to read an article* in which the journalist initially affirms that fear over the Fukushima accident plays a positive role: it can awakes, it can push us to reflect upon what’s happening, to know better and more.  The article goes on saying that we need to distinguish two types of fear: one that “paralyses the action or it’s used by dictators and another that can push us to think and to discover”.  So fear can be, in my version of Plato’s myth, the black as well the white horse.
I agree. And I think that it is lack of understanding (to say the least) on the part of the experts to paternalistically dismiss public concerns, as I think these concerns can play an important (euristic as the journalist says) role.
But I do not agree with what follows in her article. If fear/concerns are the engine pushing the quest for information, then they are starting point. We cannot stop here. We need to go further.
Otherwise, fear paralyses us, we stand still, we don’t move further risking to take our ghost for reality.
So where should we go? What should we know?

What the hell is water - 3

AntoEnglish
Too many times I have not been asking myself the simplest questions, this is why I really like D. F. Wallace's story about the fishes and the water (you can find it here, right at the beginning: http://scomunicandomi.blogspot.com/2010/02/le-sombre-accablement-detre-en-ne.html).

Initially the Fukushima nuclear accident stroke us more than the earthquake, the tsunami, the dam washing out a village, the fire at the refinery (even more than Libia, Iran...).
Why ? What was/is our fear? I think it has to do with radioactivity. It is radioactivity that makes for us the difference between a collapsed dam and an accident nuclear power plant. In other words, we are afraid of radioactive releases in a nuclear accident as well as of radioactive wastes, whose radioactivity can last for thousands year.
So a first question, a first information fear should push us to find, is: what do we know about radioactivity? What information do we have, or (depending on which side we are) we give?
Do we know, for example:
  • What is radioactivity?
  • Is it always harmful or only at a certain level/dose?
  • If it is harmful to a certain level/dose, which is it?
If we don’t know, we don’t look for these questions, we don't give any answer, then the black horse is leading us.
Let’s assume we are all radioactive, radioactivity is a natural phenomenon, which can also be artificially made. Let’s assume that at some level it is not harmful but at others it can be very dangerous, even lethal.
To speak generically about radioactive rain, to say that radioactivity has increased x times in a certain place, doesn’t mean much, if we do not know the level in which is harmful.
Or better, this to me means  to misinform, to stand still in a sea of fear.

On risks - 4

Controllo : vedi l'esempio dell'aereo e dell'automobile.

AntoEnglish
I have been saying that fear over nuclear power is essentially (not solely, but mainly) fear over radioactivity. We are afraid of the  risks radioactivity may have on our health and the environment .

Let’s then talk about risks. Every human action entails some risk: falling in love, driving a car, taking a plan, working... Either we are dead or we run some risks. But there are more risky things that others: for example taking a plane is safer than going by car.
Besides the frequency of a  risk, there are also subjective elements we associate to it. We tend to perceive something as more dangerous on the basis of some characteristics, even if it is not so in reality. Although there are higher risks in driving a car, people are generally more afraid of taking a plane.
Below some subjective elements*  increasing our perception of risks (applying  to many different  things, like OGM, terrorist attacks, viruses...):

Trust: the less we trust the people/government/corporate institutions who are supposed to protect us, the more afraid we will be. The more we trust, the less fear we feel.
Dread: what is worse, being eaten alive by a shark or dying of heart disease?
Control: see airplane vs car above

Natural or man-made: we do prefer natural risk to man-made one.
Choice: a risk we choose seems less dangerous than a risk that is imposed on us.
Children: a risk that we perceive as lasting over time, impacting on future generations, is more dreadful than an immediate one.
Uncertainty: if we do not know, if we do not have information or do not understand the information, our concerns will be higher.
Novelty: new risks (like new viruses) tend to be more frightening
Awareness: the more we are aware of a risk, the more we are likely to be concerned about it.
Can it happen to me? : any risk seems larger if you think you or someone you care about could be a victim.
The risk-benefit trade-off : if we perceive a benefit from a behaviour or choice, the risk associated with it seems smaller. If there is no perceived benefit, the risk seems larger.
Catastrophic or chronic?: hazards that kill a group of people at one time in one place (such as plane crashes) evoke more fear than hazards that may take more lives, but over space and time (such as heart disease).

How many of these characteristics has radioactivity?

Thus, if we don’t wont to be paralysed by fear, we should ask ourselves how much of subjectivity there in our perception of risks we associate with nuclear power.

AntoEnglish
A last (for the time being) excommunication. Usually among those stressing the risk of nuclear power, there are many who think that we must act against global warming. For them, carbone dioxide is a major cause of climate change and if we don't do anything, sooner or later, environmental disasters will strike our planet.
If we agree with this assumption, and  I do, then what is invisible, environmentally harmful and ever lasting?

Nurture

The dark side of the light, Pablo Echaurren

AntoEnglish
It often happens to me to meet my thoughts. Last week I was chatting with a friend  about many things, on loneliness, on parenthood, on nature/culture. I also went to a bookshop and bought a book on creativity. I quote (and translate very badly): " The opposition between nature and culture is very approximate, if not blatantly erroneous.  Nor nature is by any  means so rigid not to admit conspicuous readjustments and also by consequence  innovations, neither culture is so noble and creative to rule out the presence of some constants, certain regulative conditions...(But) thanks to that opposition the human being knows who he/she is and what she/he is...to abolish this distinction...means to lose the safe feeling of definite boundaries, to overlook once again the gulf of possibilities, to reopen the exchange between the human being and the boundless and in many ways obscure biological world." (Creatività, E. Garroni, Quodlibet)
I've always been blindly against those statements evaluating  human beaviours on the basis of their consistency with natural laws. I had never thought however that by wanting to save the human from some moralistic cage, I was arbitrarily confining nature. Also, some arguments are not (only?) made to stress a social order, disguised as a natural one, but they are based , if I understand correctly the quotation, on a  psychological constitutive element.

If I knew what it means

AntoEnglish
I read this and I like it: " We are here, on the bridge, to ask ourselves certain questions. And they are very important questions; and we have very little time in which to answer them. The questions that we have to ask and to answer about that procession during this moment of transition are so important that they may well change the lives of all men and women for ever...Think we must...Let us never cease from thinking — what is this “civilization” in which we find ourselves?"
Three guineas, Virginia Woolf.
