Truth is rarely pure and never simple (2)

AntoEnglish I miss hypocrisy, at least a certain kind of it. Not the bigots’ or the vice squad one. But when I hear, referring to tax evaders, to “end users” of escorts, and people for whom strings have been pulled, “Wouldn’t you do it at his/her place?”; when I read that a Senator of the Italian Republic says about the death of young drug addict from injuries while in police custody, that he died precisely because he was a drug addict*; when a human being commits a crime just because he/she was born in a certain country**, then I miss it a bit. If hypocrisy is homage paid by vice to virtue, then vice and virtue are at least known.

* On the 9th of November, Mr Giovanardi, a Senator, declared that the cause of death of Stefano Cucchi, who died while in custody from injuries, was his drug addiction. **The current legislation makes a crime to enter or to stay in Italy without permission.

Humour...italiano

AntoEnglish At a cinema in Rome. On the screen a catastrophe is going to destroy our planet and the Presidents, Prime Ministers etc. of the G8 countries are in huge arks, sheltering them from the end of the world. All but one, as the German Chancellor explains. The Italian President prefers to die with his citizens and he’s praying in Saint Peter’s Square. At this very moment, the audience bursts out laughing and clapping for the involuntary joke.

Truth is rarely pure and never simple

- A professo’, io so’ sincero, a me sta poesia de Leopardi me fa veramente schifo -, oppure cambiando settore - A me della guerra e della pace, me ne frega pochissimo.- " AntoEnglish
Quoting (while freely cutting) by Marco Lodoli, Il rosso e il blu, Einaudi: “Sincerity would not by any philosophy, be listed among human failures (...). Earnest people are the best, the most honest (...). However it seems to me that sincerity faces a new enemy, which is reflection. Many have been educated to say the first thing that comes to their mind, without stopping just a second to think upon it. -Teacher, I’ll be honest with you, this Byron’s poem really sucks-, or to change topics -I don’t give a shit about war and peace-”

A me mi piace

E non elargire regalie come baroni medievali” AntoEnglish I read from L’Espresso, an Italian weekly magazine, that in Germany 45 rich people ask to raise their taxes. They’ve constituted an organisation, for those who have personal fortunes of more than € 500 thousand, to call for the resumption of a 5% wealth tax. In this way they could provide the State with € 50 billion a year. Two other points have stricken my attention 1) this money should go to specific projects in education, ecology and public health; 2) the reason why they do not set up a Foundation but they ask to raise their taxes. “We want – they say- to pay taxes as any other modern citizen, not to bestow gratuities as medieval barons."

Quindi, un po’ di assordante silenzio non guasterebbe:-) AntoEnglish Note to the reader: I have not read any philosopher using the je ne sais quoi… and I am feeling fine for now. An esteemed contemporary Italian philosopher writes about another philosopher, Jankélevitch for the fans, and at the very first line he’s already getting on my nerves : “ In this book characterised by an abysmal depth...” My goodness! Ant he goes on, shameless, up to the last paragraph where he says “ Death is a commonplace that never stops surprising us”. Please ... This article, or what I could understood despite the bad mood it plunged me into, chats about how ineffable, unspeakable, elusive some human experiences are, like death for example, for which the je ne sais quoi could apply. And I say, with my usual simplistic way: 1) but the history of philosophy is full of deep – yet not abysmal – thoughts on death. And all of them are very “speakable” about; 2) let the poets and mystics deal with what is ineffable, unspeakable, elusive, they know how to do it much better than philosophers; 3) if one is not able to say clever things, he should neither hide himself behind words that yes are unspeakable, like for example je ne sais quoi, nor feign to say abysmally deep things through oxymora that only badly hide the elusiveness of the mind using them. Hence, misquoting as I usually do this time Saint Witt : “Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent".

Senza parole - Lost for words (2)

AntoEnglish From today's L’Unità

On the same newspaper an article on the fact that during the night between 28th and 29th of March 2009, 600 migrants died in the Mediterranean sea.

My ever changing moods

* v. Martha Nussbaum (qui http://www.dissentmagazine.org/article/?article=811, anche su Reset 106), in tutto un altro contesto. AntoEnglish Let’s start excommunicating :-) I would not see anymore the Italian State Tv (nor Mediaset for that matter), if it would not broadcast some "not aligned" TV programs. In Italyland now programs like Report, Anno Zero etc…, which in different degrees do not represent the "tyranny of the majority”, are experiencing some problems in being broadcasted. I would not anymore see RAI or Mediaset first of all, because I believe in what Voltaire presumably said “ I hate what you write, but I will give my life to make it possible for you to continue you to write” (a statement which I’ve read is not by him, but by Evelyn Beatrice Hall). Anyway, it is not a matter of personal taste – whether I like or not these tv programs. I think that, living in a democracy, I ought to agree on the fact that other people, who think differently from me, can find channels to express themselves. I must say that for me it is too easy: sometimes ago my tv broke up and I did not feel the need to repair it. By the way, many programs are available on their channels’ websites, and in all events, honestly, I don’t miss it at all. I’m not, however, convinced that to boycott is the best way to express my dissent. This* would -maybe - be both an economic and symbolic boycott. And in theory, I’m more worried about the economic aspect: what about those journalists, not embedded, which are still working there? So, I say to myself, it would maybe be better to express my general disagreement by going to a demonstration in favour of free press, which will take place next Saturday in Rome. I say general disagreement, as I am thinking not only about these TV programs, but also that over the last few days Italyland Premier sued two daily newspapers, La Repubblica and L’Unità. I will go, but I will remember that among the political organizations supporting the very same demonstration, there are some which have been very active in choosing journalists, not by merit, but by their political allegiance. Anyway I will, full of doubts, go. * I’m following a distinction made by Martha Nussbaum here: http://www.dissentmagazine.org/article/?article=811, for a very different case.
