In alcune determinate circostanze il rispetto per l’autorità unito a una diligenza estrema possono avere effetti più che perversi: “buona parte della spaventosa precisione con cui fu attuata la soluzione finale (...) si può ricondurre alla strana idea che essere ligi alla legge non significa semplicemente obbedire, ma anche agire come se si fosse il legislatore che ha stilato la legge cui si obbedisce.” Hannah Arendt scrive questa riflessione dopo un’affermazione paradossale che Adolph Eichmann fa durante il suo processo. Eichmann infatti dichiara di aver vissuto secondo i principi dell’etica kantiana. In particolare aggiunge “in modo tale che la mia volontà possa sempre diventare principio di leggi generali”.

La Arendt a questo punto chiarisce la distorsione della formula kantiana, diventata ora “ Agisci come se il principio delle tue azioni fosse quello stesso del legislatore del tuo paese” ovvero, sostituendo la ragione con la volontà Hitler, “Agisci in maniera che il Fuhrer, se conoscesse le tue azioni, approverebbe”. AntoEnglish In some specific circumstances law obedience coupled with extreme diligence may have more that perverse effects: “much of the horribly painstaking thoroughness in the execution of the Final Solution (…) can be traced to the odd notion that to be law abiding means not merely to obey the law but to act as though one were the legislator of the laws that one obeys.” This thought comes to Hannah Arendt after listening to a paradoxical statement by Adoph Eichmann, during his trial. He declares that he has lived accordingly to the principle of Kant ethics, in particular , he adds “that the principle of my will must always be such that it can become the principle of general laws” .

Arendt clarifies the distortion of Kant formula, which in this case reads “Act as if the principle of your actions were the same as that of the legislator or of the law of your land” or, substituting the reason with will of the Fuhrer, “ Act in such a way that the Fuhrer, if he knew your actions, would approve it”.
