Ubi solitudinem faciunt, pacem appellant

AntoEnglish On this week Internazionale there is an article by Jane Mayer, The New Yorker, about the CIA’s use of drones to kill terrorist suspects in Pakistan. Some key points of the article, which you may find here http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2009/10/26/091026fa_fact_mayer: 1) This CIA program is of course secret, so nobody knows how many have been killed 2) One of the advantages of this technology is that it is a “zero cost” war, i.e. no troops are involved. 3) Use of drones could violate international law, under which,"in order for the U.S. government to legally target civilian terror suspects abroad it has to define a terrorist group as one engaging in armed conflict, and the use of force must be a military necessity. There must be no reasonable alternative to killing, such as capture, and to warrant death the target must be “directly participating in hostilities.” The use of force has to be considered “proportionate” to the threat. Finally, the foreign nation in which such targeted killing takes place has to give its permission." The zero cost point made me think of something I read in The Age of Extremes, by E Hobsbawn. Talking about - if I remember well- the use of aviation in the II World War after the mass killings of the First one, he says “In the longer run democratic government failed to resist the temptation of saving their own citizens’ lives by treating those of enemy countries as totally expendable. The dropping of the atom bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was not justified as indispensable for victory (…) but as a means of saving American soldiers’ lives. "

Contro Facebook

Paul Feyerabend
AntoEnglish I registered on Facebook a few days ago…and I’m starting to regret it. As many things, I feel that "meaning is use". Facebook is very useful for news, thoughts, videos and music. But…I received “friendship” (following FB use of language) requests by people I have not met for 20 years, or by people I met one evening. Now, there must be reason I guess if I have not seen you, and you me, for 20 years. Or, who knows if I want to "be your friend" after one meeting? And please tell me why there are some people who make public their sentimental status? Is FB a dating agency? If you are a friend of mine, I should know your situation, otherwise... who cares? I participated, mea culpa, in a game in which you had to make public the colour of your underwear…And then I read a comment which asked for participation in another game, one in which you should define yourself by a book, a comment saying that the underwear one was stupid. Well, it definitely was a silly thing, as it is, mutatis mutandis, that of the book. And I was scolded because at 7am I “published” the first four lines of a poem by Yeats (the Lake of Innisfree for the fans). Please tell me what’s wrong with that?
P.S. Just to be clear, I have very few "friends" on FB, all but two whom I'm not only virtually in contact with, and I did not "accept" requests by those whom I have not see for 20 years and those I saw once.

On a bus...

AntoEnglish A challenge to solid geometry, a Stoic practice of chresis fantasion, or less pedantically of self-discipline: that’s what a bus is to me every morning. A bag in a hip, an umbrella tip in the shin bone, sometimes a hand on the b….I’ve heard somewhere that each of us needs a free space of about 30 cm radius around him/herself in order not to feel oppressed. As for the sounds, some mobile ringtones are really embarrassing: Neapolitan songs, orgasm moanings, faked metallic children voices… The bus is more generally a public transportation, i.e. a public space. In this sense, and in all the others, what I stand the less are some comments I all too often hear. This morning for example: two ladies were advising some students to marry and give birth “ You have to have at least 10 children”, they were saying. We were smiling, but then they went on saying “Otherwise these foreigners will drive us way. Now they are event making the revolution!" (referring to what has been happening in Rosarno). On my right I had a Somali lady, on my left a Bangladeshi gentleman. Basta! And it’s not a question of censorship, it’s Kant first categorical imperative “Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law”, it’s my freedom ends where yours starts, or less pedantically, it’s just a bit of respect for the human being.

Homo sum, humani nihil a me alienum puto

Rabbia, tristezza, impotenza, inadeguatezza.
AntoEnglish Rage, sadness, frustration, inadequateness. Rosarno, a small coastal town in Calabria. More than 60 have been wounded in clashes among migrants, Italians and police officers. Rosarno hosts about 1,500 immigrant workers, all of whom work as citrus fruit or vegetable pickers. Interior Minister commented that this situation derives from a too lenient policy “In these years illegal immigration has been tolerated without doing anything effective, an immigration that on the one hand has fed crime, and on the other has led to situations of extreme squalor as that at Rosarno”. In the Minister dictionary if you look for the term criminal you will then find:
one who gets a 25 euros undeclared pay per day for picking fruits, who lives in these houses (see photo above), in a town where the city council was dissolved last year because of mafia infiltration.

Ladies night

L’ho fatto.
AntoEnglish I made it. A nice evening with two dear friends in a good and unpretentious restaurant, located in an almost porsh area. Women chatting about ups and downs in Rome…and she entered the room. She is Laura Morante, a very good Italian actress whom I’m very sorry if you do not know ...it reminds me somehow of Fanny Ardant anyway. My heart sunk, I felt like a child in front of Candy Candy or Goldrake. Beautiful, elegant, sensual and simple at the same time. Thanks to our cumulative age, which is almost 120 years for the three of us, the sinking was short and we went back to our chatting. But we stop to write her a note, which was brought to her by the waiter. As far as I am concerned I did it also because I had not done it when I had the age to do it. Once in my life:-).

Forza Emma

Grazie Emma! AntoEnglish Many years have passed since I voted for somebody I was happy to vote: at last I will! I have not always agreed with Emma Bonino, candidate for Governor of Lazio, it even happened I strongly disagreed with her. But certainly I do like her commitment to civil rights, moreover I think she walks the talk and she’s honest. To know more about her :http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emma_Bonino

Body and soul

AntoEnglish How can a body learn anything? Mine slowly and badly. Since September I’ve been taking tango lessons and recently I’ve gone through a full immersion yoga experience. Going so near to another body while dancing tango is terrifying for me as it is to let us (i.e. females) lead by men, without us (i.e. beginner females) having the slightest clue about what to put where . To trust some BODY (sorry, too easy:-)) unknown is awful, but I like the music as well as improvisation– as I like it in jazz. Yoga is a solitary effort, by which one deconstructs physical habits to find new equilibria (this is just a speculation of my mind, as my body is just painfully looking for them). Many years ago I studied some singing and since then I sometimes ask myself how can a body learn, without keys or cords.

A me mi piace (2)

AntoEnglish In one of the last issues of Internazionale*, there is an article I like by Laila Wadia. The story takes place in a Trieste café on the 1st of December, on the very same day in which more than fifty years ago Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white passenger. In this Asburgic town, over the last months street vendors, mainly from African countries, have increased. Many of them were blue collars who lost their jobs. One of these vendors approaches a lady sitting in this city center café, who doesn’t want anything to buy but looks for a one euro coin to give him . As she finds none, she handles him a 5 euros note, with which – he says - he will buy some meet to cook a ragù instead of the usual tomato sauce. They start chatting about recipes, she keeps on explaining how to make a soffritto, how to brown minced meat etc, when they are interrupted by a bartender asking the vendor to leave the premises. As he’s setting off the lady reminds him he has got the money to pay. “I’m staying” he then says. *Internazionale is a weekly magazine of articlestranslated into Italian from media around the world (similar to the French Courier International).
